Punk Rock, the Music Video, and Middle-aged Rock Comes of Age

A turning point in rock music occurred in the mid-1970s in the form of punk rock, which was a response to the stagnation of the genre and a nihilistic political statement. The music was filled with contempt for previous styles; its fast-tempoed songs, usually propelled by electric guitar, featured irreverant lyrics often obscured by the clangerous music. Evident in Great Britain, performed by such bands as the Sex Pistols During the 1980s music videos became a popular form of promotion and entertainment. Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 – c. April 5, 1994) was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the Seattle-based rock band Nirvana. He served not only as the band's frontman and principal songwriter, but also as its "leader and spiritual center."[1] With the band's success, Cobain became a major national and international celebrity, an uncomfortable position for a man who once said, "Famous is the last thing I wanted to be."[2] Cobain and Nirvana helped reshape popular music in the 1990s. In 1991, the arrival of Nirvana's hit single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" marked the beginning of a dramatic shift of popular rock music away from the dominant genres of the 1980s (glam metal, arena rock, and dance-pop) and toward grunge and alternative rock. The music media eventually awarded the song "anthem-of-a-generation" status,[3] and, with it, Cobain ascended as the reluctant "spokesman" for Generation X. Other hit songs written by Cobain include "Come as You Are", "Lithium", "In Bloom", "Heart-Shaped Box", "All Apologies", and "About a Girl".

A LEGACY:

The mythic nature of Cobain's life even captured the eyes of filmmakers. Gus Van Sant based his 2005 movie Last Days on what might have happened in the final hours of Cobain's life. In January 2007, Courtney Love began to shop the biography Heavier Than Heaven to various movie studios in Hollywood to turn the book into an A-list feature film about Cobain and Nirvana. Cobain's own words were used to narrate a documentary on his life, titled Kurt Cobain About a Son. Journalist Michael Azerrad interviewed the band extensively for his 1993 book Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana, and recorded twenty-five hours of tape with Cobain.
As Cobain has no gravesite, many Nirvana fans visit Viretta Park, near Cobain's former Lake Washington home, to pay tribute. On the anniversary of his death, fans gather in the park to celebrate his life and memory.

In October 2006, Cobain's posthumous fame among mainstream media was revived when Forbes Magazine ranked him as the top dollar-earning dead celebrity, earning an estimated $50 million from October 2005 to October 2006. In the six years of the list's publication, Elvis Presley had topped the list every year, but 'The King' fell short of Cobain's earnings by about $8 million. This was the first time that Cobain appeared on the list, and according to Forbes writer Lacey Rose, "his debut atop the list is largely due to his widow, Courtney Love, who sold a 25% stake in his song catalog to publishing company Primary Wave for a reported $50 million.
Years after his death, Cobain continues to intrigue and inspire fans. A full eight years after his death, Nirvana's final studio recording, "You Know You're Right", became a hit, bringing a new generation of Nirvana fans. "Nevermind" remains a watershed in alternative music, and consistently ranks in "best album" lists throughout the world.

During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with drug addiction and the media pressures surrounding him and his wife Courtney Love. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his home. His death was ruled a suicide by self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

Garage rock is a raw form of rock and roll that enjoyed its original period of wide success in the United States and Canada, from 1963 to 1967. During the 1960's, it was not recognized as an actual genre and thus had no actual name. It was later labeled as "punk rock," by rock critics during the early 1970s but renamed to "garage rock" to avoid confusion with the late 1970s punk a la the Sex Pistols.

History

The style was typified by very low cost record production, recordings often made by teenagers in the garages of their suburban homes, though the garage was more likely a location for band rehearsals than making recordings. The 1958 record "Jenny Lee" by Jan and Arnie (later to evolve into Jan and Dean), is sometimes cited as the first "garage rock" hit although one specific starting point would be difficult to identify.

United States 1960s

The style had been evolving from regional scenes as far back as 1958. "Dirty Robber" by The Wailers, from

Tacoma, Wash., and "Rumble" by Link Wray are generally considered the first "garage rock" songs. Other early practioners included the Rumblers, from Downey, Calif., whose 1962 song "I Dont Need You No More" released on Dot Records also anticipated the classic garage sound of 1964-66.
It was not until 1963 that garage bands crept into the national charts. These bands were all products of local scenes and included: The Kingsmen (Portland), Paul Revere and the Raiders (Boise/Portland), The Trashmen (Minneapolis) and The Rivieras (South Bend, Indiana

The British Invasion of 1964-1966 did greatly influence the garage band sound as many local American bands began augmenting a British Invasion sound. The British Invasion also inspired new, and often very raw, bands to form. Garage rock bands were generally influenced by those British bands with a harder, blues-based attack, such as The Kinks, The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things and The Rolling Stones. The Beatles were an all-pervasive musical influence during this time, but as they had their harder and softer musical sides, were disdained by some of the more purist garage rock bands. Another influence was the folk-rock of the Byrds and Bob Dylan, especially on bands such as the Leaves.
Looking back from a later perspective, it is generally agreed that Garage rock peaked both commercially and artistically in 1966. It went into a slow, but irreversible, decline beginning in the Fall of 1967, with fewer and fewer examples of the genre being released in 1968 and 1969, and generally disappearing entirely by 1970. One reason, perhaps, it declined is that that it was not an identified genre in its own time. The style was first identified in the early 1970s by record collectors and critics. Originally it was called "punk rock." However, when the Sex Pistols/Ramones era dawned, some started referring to it as "1960's punk" to avoid confusion. Eventually, likely in the 1980s, the punk rock tag was dropped altogether in favor of "garage rock," although some still refer to '60s garage as '60s punk or garage-punk.
"Garage rock" comes from the perception that many such performers were young and amateurish, and often rehearsed in a family garage. This connotation also evokes a suburban, middle-class setting. It is, of course, quite simplistic to conclude that all garage bands met this demographic dynamic. Some bands were made up of middle-class teenagers from the suburbs, while others were comprised of professional musicians in their twenties or older.
The performances were often amateurish or naïve. Typical themes revolved around the traumas of high school life, and lyin’ and cheatin’ girls (or boys). Superficially, this implies that the music was very limited. In reality, "Garage rock" performers were quite diverse in both musical ability and in style. Bands ranged the gamut from one-chord musical crudeness (e.g., The Seeds, The Keggs) to near-studio musician quality (e.g., The Knickerbockers, The Remains). There were also regional variations in many parts of the country with the Pacific Northwest states of Washington and Oregon having the best defined regional sound.
Thousands of garage bands were extant in the USA and Canada during the era. Several dozen of these produced national hit records, including "Psychotic Reaction" by The Count Five (1966), "Pushin' Too Hard" by The Seeds (1966), "Gloria" by the Shadows of Knight (1966), "96 Tears" by Question Mark and the Mysterians (1966), "Talk Talk" by The Music Machine (1966), "Louie, Louie" by The Kingsmen (1963-64), "Dirty Water" by The Standells (1966), and "Double Shot (of My Baby's Love)" by The Swingin' Medallions (1966).
A larger number produced regional hits. Examples include: "Where You Gonna Go" by the Unrelated Segments in Detroit (1967), "The Witch" by the Sonics in Seattle (1965) "French Girl" by The Daily Flash, also in Seattle (1966) and "Girl I Got News for You" by The Birdwatchers in Miami (1967). From Boston came "Don't Look Back" by the Remains and "Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl?" and "Moulty" by The Barbarians. Canadian hits include "125" by The Haunted, "Who Dat" by The Jury and "It's My Pride" by The Guess Who, prior to their later success.
Other hits by garage rock performers who enjoyed later success include "Just Like Me" by Paul Revere & the Raiders (1965) and "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" by The Rascals (1965).
As one would expect, the vast majority of garage bands were commercial failures. This is despite most of the better bands being signed to major or large regional labels. "Going All The Way" by The Squires is now regarded as a classic of the genre, despite never having been a hit anywhere.
By 1968 the style largely disappeared from the national charts (“Question of Temperature” by The Balloon Farm was a notable exception), and was only being played as a trace element at the local level as new styles had evolved to replace garage rock (e.g., progressive rock, country rock, Bubblegum, etc.) and as the music industry withdrew its support. However, in Detroit garage rock stayed alive until the early 70's, but with a much more aggressive style than early garage rock. Some of the late Detroit garage rock bands were The Stooges, the MC5, Alice Cooper, and The Amboy Dukes.

Later 70s and early 80s: revival

Record collectors began to document this music beginning in 1970 as first reported in Greg Shaw’s Bomp! Magazine. In 1972, rock critic Lenny Kaye assembled a collection of some of the more commercially successful songs of the era on a compilation LP called Nuggets. This record, with decent record sales, reacquainted many of these mid-sixties bands to the attention of collectors and mainstream rock fans for the first time. It also helped to coalesce an identity for the genre.
In the later 1970s and early 1980s, compilation LPs surfaced which more deeply explored the extent of garage rock than Nuggets ever did. These records became widely known to record collectors. The better of these are the Pebbles, Boulders and Back from the Grave series. Largely because of the success of these compilations beginning in the late 1970s a full-scale revival of the music occurred. the 1960's the British Invasion created a wave of new musicians in the USA and throughout the world striving to be the next Beatles or Rolling Stones. This large number of bands flooded many local rock music scenes playing to local audiences and eventually recording in small local studios.

Surf Rock

Surf music is a combination of rock and roll and rockabilly music combined with the surfer lifestyle and ethic of the Southern California Coast and fused into a new genre of music. It is a style charged by a hard rock influenced instrumental sounds, particularly the guitar, and rockabilly grooves.

Mod

Mod or Modern music developed in London, England in the late 1950s to mid 1960s. As much a lifestyle as a musical style mods sported short bobbed haircuts and distinctive clothes. Mod's were inspired by American r&b, soul, Jamaican ska, and bluebeat combined with hard rock influences like the The Who and Small Faces.

British Invasion

American rock and roll had an tremendous impact on the entire world and especially in Britain. British kids were inspired by the r&b and rock movements which began to form the beginnings of the British Invasion in the underground of London in the late 50s. Before long bands from England were dominating the rock and roll scene throughout the world and soon found its way back to America where the influences had originated.

Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock evolved in the 60s as an offshoot of the rock and roll movement combining elements of rock, reggae, and other diverse elements. Involving the use of mind altering drugs like cannabis, mescaline, psilocybin, and especially LSD, psychedelic rock broke with traditional rock and laid the roots for psychedelic metal and experimental rock genres.

Progressive Rock

Progressive rock is a very general and intertwined genre of music which got its start in the late 60s, and continues to this day. Progressive rock is often lumped together with other similar genres like art rock, symphonic rock, and progressive heavy metal. The artists try to take the roots of rock and apply them to a more classically influenced structure. The music is often very elaborate and generally requires very exceptional musicians with a great deal of talent. It is not unusual for prog rock pieces to be very lengthy in some cases they are over an hour in length.

Hard Rock

Hard rock is a form of rock & roll that finds its roots in the early 1960s garage rock and draws from jazz, blues, rock and roll, and other influences like folk in the case of famed hard rock artist Led Zeppelin who's main writer and composer Jimmy Page was a famous studio musician and expert guitar player who was interested in Celtic and folk influences. These diverse influences can be clearly heard in one of the most influential albums of this style Led Zeppelin 4. Budgie, AC/DC, The Stooges, MC5, Prong, Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple are also classic examples of early hard rock.

Glam Rock

Glam rock became popular in the 70s in what was mostly a British movement with a few notable exceptions. Using lavish and effeminate clothes and heavily made up male performers glam acts rejected the progressive rock movement embracing the lavish lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Power Pop

Power pop is a mixture of hard rock with pop music to product a style of music which was extremely popular in the early days of rock music. The term was coined by Pete Townshend of The Who in the mid-1960s the first true power pop did not appear till the early 70s. One of the first was the Raspberries who combined influences like the Who, the Byrds, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles to make pop music with a harder edge.

Heavy Metal

Heavy metal music was born around to1964-1970 from bands like the Kinks, the Who, Alice Cooper's The Spiders, Cream, Golden Earring, Led Zeppelin, Vanilla Fudge, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Blue Cheer, Atomic Rooster, Cactus, Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple, Free, Uriah Heep, Mountain, Bloodrock, Black Widow, and Black Sabbath between 1966 and 1970, Iron Butterfly Heavy album and Steppenwolf's song Born to Be Wild which contained the phrase heavy metal thunder share credit for the name heavy metal.

Punk rock

Punk rock got its name from the slang word punk meaning rotten and worthless. It was originally used to describe simple guitar based rock of bands like The Seeds, and later on Detroit bands like The Stooges and MC5. The anti-establishment ethic of punk hit a fevered pitch in 1976 through 1980, started partially as a backlash to the hippie movement of the late 60's.

Krautrock

Krautrock was a offshoot of the rock movement during the late 60s and 70s involving German acts such as Can, Tangerine Dream, Faust, and Neu. Largely instrumental krautrock combined rock elements with electronic instruments which laid the framework for the later industrial rock and new wave movements.

Southern Rock

Southern rock goes back to the origins of the rock and roll movement to innovators like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard who all came from the South. Drawing heavily from the blues, rock and roll redefined music causing an revolution that would sweep the world continuing up to the present time. The British Invasion and then psychedelic rock movement in San Francisco took rock music out of the south and to places like London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.

Indie rock

Indie rock is a subgenre of rock music which is often used to refer to bands that are on small independent or "indie" record labels or who aren't on labels at all. In the 1980s, these bands were referred to as "alternative rock", since they were quite different that the mainstream rock that dominated the radio at that time. It was also interchangeable with the term college rock which was named after the main source of the music at the time was the college radio.

Experimental rock

Experimental rock has long been a catchall phrase used to describe rock music that does not fit into any other genre. Other genres that overlap somewhat are post rock, industrial, emo, and progressive rock. The form typically breaks conventions and rules and redefining what is considered music. Proponents of the form love the freedom to explore endless sonic possibilities and the unpredictability and excitement that the genre presents.

College Rock

In the early eighties hard rock dominated the FM radio stations in the rock format and the genre of alternative music was all but unknown by mainstream listeners. Alternative music was limited to a few scattered college radio stations and small self contained local scenes and groups. In the mid 80s as it became more popular It began to take over college radio throughout the country and slowly made its way into the attention of a large group of college kids and other listeners who tuned into the local radio stations to keep up with the acts.

Gothic Rock

Gothic rock started as a offshoot of the punk movement led by groups like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, and Joy Division who created a new more introverted style of punk which focused on personal issues and ideas while paying tribute to the influence of early punk bands like The Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks, The Clash, and Generation X.

Gothic Metal

Gothic metal is a crossover genre between traditional gothic music, thrash and doom metal, and heavy metal. Common themes are religion, mythology, horror, pain, hopeless love and death. Traditionally the genre is closely related to the vampirism and nihilism movements but only on the surface. The dress is similar to the traditional gothic movement featuring dark clothes and makeup and religious symbols but as always there are notable exceptions. Goths are not as many believe linked to violence but are actually pacifists by and large.

Speed Metal

Speed metal is a small subset of the heavy metal movement and even rabid hardcore fans can't always agree on which bands fit in this category. It is very similar to thrash metal but combines more progressive rock elements with lyrical elements of apocalyptic fears and collective oppression. One thing that most agree on is that the genre is defined by blistering guitar speed, progressive rock arrangements, twisted song structures, extremely difficult guitar solos and anti social lyrics.

Thrash Metal

Thrash is characterized by brief uncomplicated sonic assaults charged by the influences of hardcore punk and heavy metal. Formed of lightning fast guitar riffs and antisocial lyrics reminiscent of punk rocks early years Thrash and its direct descendant grindcore are very socially conscious however unlike many punk and heavy metal bands. Songs of a minute or less were not uncommon and screamed vocal styling and compositional techniques would create all the tools necessary for bands in the doom metal genre soon to come.

Psychedelic Metal

Psychedelic metal is a type of heavy metal music which arose in the early 1990s. Post metal bands began to combine psychedelic rock and grunge and other influences and combining it into an underground movement some labeled stoner rock. Bands like Kyuss, Masters of Reality, and Monster Magnet were among the most popular practitioners.

Alternative Metal

Alternative Metal is an offshoot of Heavy Metal which is characterized by a combination of hip hop, hardcore punk, and heavy metal combined with other genres. Alternative metal's early bands were Jane's Addiction, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Living Colour among others and incorporated blues, jazz, funk, and hardcore in varying degrees. Faith No More, Sonic Youth, Fishbone, and Seattle's pre grunge bands Melvins, Mudhoney, Tad and Mother Love Bone were early pioneers in the genre.

Neoclassical Metal

Neoclassical metal draws on classical music fused with heavy metal to create darker more challenging compositions which redefined the genre of heavy metal being reincorporated in the movement. Incorporating ideas like classical composition, arpeggios, and counterpoint combining them with dark menacing guitars and nontraditional instruments.

Progressive Metal

Progressive metal or prog metal as some call it is a combination of progressive rock and heavy metal which came into popularity during the late 80's with cutting edge bands like Queensryche and Dream Theatre. Progressive metal has a small but very loyal and devoted group of fans that have allowed it to survive when more mainstream genres have died out.

Death Metal

Death metal was spawned in the US and Canada during the 80s with bands like Death, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Winter, and Cannibal Corpse. Death metal is known for extreme speed and incredibly violent lyrics combining elements of heavy metal, thrash metal, and speed metal. The vocals are little more than inaudible growls usually exposing very dark subjects. Known for very abrupt tempo and count changes and blistering tempos.

Doom Metal

Doom metal is a variation of heavy metal music which is slow and dark and filled with tension. Black Sabbath's early albums were a great source of inspiration for the genre . Bands like Trouble and Candlemass combined these influences with more modern ones to clearly define the genre in the late 80's. Originally from Chicago, Trouble formed in 79 but did not become popular until 84.

Grindcore

Grindcore is a combination of thrash metal, speed metal, hardcore punk ,and death metal. The genre is typified by atonal chromatic guitar riffs borrowed from thrash and speed metal and the guttural growling vocals of death metal combined with the hardcore punk attitude. Its name comes from the grinding of simple chromatic guitar riffs and melodies and the attitude of hardcore punk.

New Wave

Record executives had missed the marketing bandwagon with the punk rock movement (due to the fact most punk albums were released independently). Determined not to let that happen again they began signing and promoting post punk bands or New Wave acts as they were beginning to be called very aggressively in the early 80's. Drawing heavily from glam rock and the industrial music genres the music was defined very broadly including everyone from acts like Devo and Madness to the Police.

Grunge

In the mid 80's a small movement was brewing in an unlikely place, Seattle, Washington. This movement was not actually lead by Nirvana as many have said when they released "Nevermind" in September of 91 but actually went back to other Seattle bands like Melvins and Mudhoney. It was due in large part to Nirvana and Pearl Jam that the movement came to the forefront of mainstream success, a move which combined with the tragedy of Kurt Cobain's death conspired to kill the movement.

Post Rock

rm Post-rock is really just a general description of bands which don't fit a standard rock format. The term post rock first appeared in print in 1993 when a writer was describing the first studio album by Bark Psychosis called Hex. The album combines thick textures, acoustic instruments, moody overtones, and other classic staples of the genre.

Alternative rock

Alternative music was a phrase invented in early 80s describing bands which broke from the barrage of pop and hair metal and formed a new direction of more focused and honest rock. It includes many subcategories including but not limited to Grunge, Hard Rock, Indie Rock, Experimental Rock, Progressive Rock, College Rock, Gothic Rock, Heavy Metal, Punk Rock, Power Pop, Hardcore Punk, New Wave .

Nu Metal

The latest incarnation of heavy metal is usually associated with bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Amen, the Deftones, and Papa Roach Its creation is often linked to music producer Ross Robinson who is called the guru of nu-metal. The performing style is still a heavily amplified theatre of blood, guts and gore, including costumed artists and pyrotechnic blasts fused with angry detuned guitars.

Industrial rock

The term Industrial music is a very generic term for many subgroups or genres of music like ambient, noise, techno, house, lo-fi, and several others. The most obvious stereotype that comes to mind is a distorted, percussive, lo-fi electronic samples weaved into the fabric of a traditional pop song or dance remixes. The first band who are considered to be a part of this genre are Throbbing Gristle who formed Industrial Records in the 1970's.

Emo

Emo may be one of the hardest genres to define. Even those who love the music may disagree on what it actually is. The answer most people agree on is that Emo is very similar to Hardcore Punk except with more emotional lyrics often expressing sadness, love and even anger, hence the term emo.

Surf Rock

Surf rock is a style of music that originated in the USA that mixes elements of surf music and rock music. While in the 1960s surf music and rock n' roll were distinct styles, associated with competing dance styles and representing distinct and competing youth cultures, the development of rock music since then has built upon both styles. Many authorities now retrospectively classify all surf bands as rock bands, and surf music therefore as a subgenre of rock music.
Duane Eddy's instrumental "Movin' and Groovin'" is thought by many to be the main contender for laying the groundwork as the first surf rock record, while others claim the genre was invented by Dick Dale on Let's Go Trippin', an instrumental which became a hit throughout California. . Dale's influence on the surf genre was profound. He was a surfer himself and sought to transfer the excitement and adrenaline of the sport through his guitar playing. He often drew on his Lebanese heritage, incorporating modal tonalities and instruments such as finger cymbals and reeds. Many surf bands that followed him incorporated Eastern influences, as well as Dale's generous use of reverb. His fast staccato playing was also very influential and an important part of the early surf sound, perhaps even more so than the reverb, which was only introduced years after Dale had already released his first albums. In Australia, which has always had a strong beach culture, the genre was strongly embraced in the 1960's, although Australian surf rock bands such as The Atlantics took their influences more from the famed British instrumental band The Shadows.
Instrumental rock band The Ventures also had a number of surf hits, their most widely known being "Walk Don't Run". The Chantays recorded a top single with "Pipeline".... Probably the most widely known surf melody and rock drum solo in the history of rock and roll however, is from The Surfaris.The most famous surf tune hit was in 1963 by the Surfaris "Wipe Out", making it to # 2 and # 10 on Billboard in 1965. They had two other global hits "Surfer Joe" and "Point Panic". The Surfaris are known for their cutting edge advangart lead guitar Jim Fuller and Ron Wilson drum songs. During the mid- to late 1990s, surf rock experienced a revival in the works of such artists as The Blue Stingrays, Bomboras, Man or Astro-man?, and The Aqua Velvets. The popularity of the movie "Pulp Fiction" which featured surf music fuelled the revival well into this century.

A typical surf amplifier setup consists of a Fender Reverb spring reverberation unit used with a Fender blackface Twin Reverb amplifier. For a guitar, models by Fender, Mosrite, Teisco, or Danelectro are regular choices. Short-scale guitars like the Fender Jaguar are particularly popular, while Fender Stratocasters were often seen in the hands of prominent artists like The Ventures and Dick Dale. Fender, Danelectro, Mosrite bass guitars are common as well. Surf drum kits tend to be Rogers, Ludwig, or Slingerland.

Spy Rock is a subgenre of surf rock featuring similarly complex melodies, usually set in minor keys, evocative of film noir. Examples include the bands Double Naught Spy Car and the Twenty-Twos. An easily recognizable example of this subgenre is the James Bond Theme, from the popular series of spy movies, performed by The Ventures.
Surfabilly is a subgenre often featuring traditional surf melodies played over rockabilly chord structures. Examples include the bands The Red Elvises, Southern Culture on the Skids, and The Young Werewolves.
Hot Rod Rock (also called Drag Rock) is also a subgenre of surf rock. Traditional surf rock sounds are applied to lyrics about the also rising hot rod culture. For a few years it gained mass popularity. The Rip-Chords, Ronny and the Daytonas, and The Hondells are good examples of this subgenre. The Beach Boys and Dick Dale produced songs in this subgenre such as "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Mag Wheels".
Space Rock is a subgenre of surf rock. It contains many of the characteristics of the "true" surf rock sound, but it also contains many elements from pop and rockabilly. Rather than surfing, the titles of the songs are associated with outer space travel and technology, and feature more other-worldly sounds. The album The Ventures in Space is a good example.
Surf Punk is a highly inclusive subgenre of surf rock that incorporates many of the styles and attitudes of punk music with traditional vocal and instrumental surf. The Ramones experimented with surf and numerous small bands of the midwest currently perform this style. The Amino Acids of Detroit, Michigan and The Deformities of Omaha, Nebraska, and others like Estrume'n'tal, build on this genre, while bringing in other influences such as heavy metal and/or psychobilly.
Eleki could be considered a catch-all phrase for the style of guitar-based music developed in Japan following the Ventures 1962 tour. Important Japanese surf guitar players include Yuzo Kayama and Takeshi Terauchi. The 'Eleki boom' guitar craze sparked by the Ventures tour had a profound and long lasting effect on Japanese rock music; when the Ventures returned to Japan in 1965 they were greeted with Beatlemania-like crowds. The Ventures are still very popular in Japan and continue to tour the country annually. The Surf Coasters are probably the most popular contemporary Japanese surf rock band.

Origins

The mod subculture began with a few cliques of teenage boys with family connections to the garment trade in London in 1958. These early mods were generally middle class, and were obsessed with new fashions and music styles, such as slim-cut Italian suits, modern jazz and rhythm and blues. Their all-night urban social life was fueled, in part, by amphetamines. It is a popular belief that the mods and their rivals, the rockers, both branched off from the Teddy boys, a 1950s subculture in England. The Teddy boys were influenced by American rock n' roll, wore Edwardian-style clothing, and got pompadour or quiff hairstyles.

Originally the term mods was used to describe fans of modern jazz music, as opposed to the trads, fans of traditional jazz. After a while, the meaning was expanded beyond the musical tastes, eventually including other fashion and lifestyle elements associated with the original mods, such as continental clothes, scooters and to a lesser degree a taste for pop art, French Nouvelle Vague films and existentialist philosophy.
Mods would gather at all-night clubs such as the Twisted Wheel Club to show off their clothes and dance moves. They would typically use scooters as their mode of transportation, typically either Lambretta or Vespa. One reason for this is that public transit stopped relatively early, and scooters were cheaper than cars. After a law was passed requiring at least one mirror be attached to every motorbike, many mods added 4, 10, or even 32 mirrors to their scooters as a mockery of the new law. This can be seen in the cover for The Who's album, Quadrophenia, which depicts the main character, Jimmy, on his scooter looking into his four rear-view mirrors.
As the lifestyle developed and was adopted by English teenagers of all economic strata, mods expanded their musical tastes beyond jazz and R&B — to also embrace soul (particularly Motown), Jamaican ska and bluebeat. They also developed a distinct brand of British beat music and R&B, exemplified by bands such as the Small Faces, The Who, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, and Spencer Davis Group. Lesser-known British bands associated with the mod scene include The Action, The Creation, and John's Children. Cathy McGowan, who presented the television rock show Ready Steady Go! became known as the "Queen of the Mods" (a title sometimes applied to, among others, the singer Dusty Springfield).
A youth subculture known as rockers (associated with motorcycles and leather biker jackets) sometimes clashed with the mods, leading to battles in seaside resorts such as Brighton, Margate, and Hastings in 1964. The mods and rockers conflict led to a moral panic about modern youth in Britain.
Mods were criticized in the movie Blowup as being epicureans and hedonistic youths without morality; in the film, despite having evidence of a murder and of the murderer's identity, the main character cannot be roused out of his stupor to report the crime, or even care.

Decline and new beginnings

The mods were the products of a culture of constant change, and perhaps it was inevitable that the scene would devour itself. By the time Bobby Moore held the World Cup aloft in the summer of 1966, the mod scene was in sharp decline. As psychedelic music and the hippie culture rose, many people drifted away from the mod lifestyle. Hippie culture, with its Bohemian traits, presented a passive outlook on life that was the total opposite of the frenetic energy of the mod ethos. Bands like The Who and The Faces had changed their musical styles and no longer represented themselves as mods.
At the other end of the spectrum, both in philosophy and appearance, the hard mods (AKA gang mods) were rougher than the rest of their comrades. With less emphasis on new fashion trends, and with short cropped hair, they became the first skinheads. They kept the original mod music alive and retained basic elements of the mod look – three-button suits, Fred Perry and Ben Sherman shirts, Sta-Prest trousers and Levi's jeans - but mixed them with working class accessories such as braces and Dr. Martens boots.

Revival and later influence

The 1979 film Quadrophenia, based on the 1973 album of the same name by The Who, celebrated the mod movement and partly inspired a mod revival in the UK during the late 1970s, which was followed by a revival in North America during the early 1980s, particularly in Southern California. Many of these mod revival bands were influenced by the energy of British punk rock. The revival was led by the band The Jam, and included bands such as Secret Affair, Purple Hearts and The Chords
The 1990s Britpop scene displayed obvious mod influences, with bands such as Oasis, Blur and Ocean Colour Scene (who have collaborated with Paul Weller). Mods have made up a notable proportion of the northern soul movement, a subculture based on obscure 1960s and 1970s American soul records. The mod subculture has spread around the world, and now mainly exists as an underground culture. Mod culture is an influence on some members of the German electronic music scene, such as keyboardist Erobique, electronic singer/songwriter Lotte ohm. and Frank Popp.[citation needed] In the 2000s, some indie rock bands, such as The Ordinary Boys, have been influenced by the mod revival.

Rock and roll like all genres has almost as many definitions as it has fans. Rock and Roll generally refers to rock music recorded around the 1950s including mostly southern artists like Bill Haley and Elvis Presley. Rock generally is used to refer to any popular rock music recorded since the early 60's.The word rocking was first used by gospel singers in the South as a slang term for spiritual rapture. A double meaning became evident in 1947 blues artist Roy Brown's song Good Rocking Tonight which he claimed was about dancing was in fact a synonym for sex. Rock music much like blues was limited to jukeboxes and racially mixed clubs and apparently censors were fooled allowing the song to later be played on the radio to huge success.
Many other blues artists followed suit including Wild Bill Moore who recorded a song called rock and roll in 1949. Since rock and roll albums were only sold in racially mixed music stores very few white audiences had heard of them. In 1951 disc jockey Alan Freed of Cleveland Ohio begin playing rock and roll for his mostly white audience and it soon became a national phenomenon which would eventually envelop the world.
Rock and Roll usually combines a vocalist, an acoustic drum kit played with a strong beat, usually a back beat and features electric guitars, acoustic guitars or saxophone. Blues records of the 20s were the inspiration for much of the early rock and roll sound. Early artists combined jump blues, boogie woogie, r&b, jazz, and gospel music to form a new genre that would become a driving force in music for the next 50 years and beyond.
According to music historian Peter Guralnick the first rock and roll artist was by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats who recorded Rocket 88 for the Sun Records label in 1951. The first to achieve commercial success with white audiences were Chuck Berry's with Maybellene and Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets. Fats Domino recorded blues songs in 1949 that to most are indistinguishable from rock and roll combining the same influences that will be later cited as the ones that gave birth to rock and roll. Racial tensions in the United States were high in the early 50's as African Americans protested segregation and other mistreatment. The "separate but equal" rule of law was overturned in 1954 allowing for free coexistence of all races and laying the foundation for a genre of music which would combine white and black musical genres into one of the most controversial music styles ever. A style which had parents in the 50' cringing in fear, rock and roll.
Despite the efforts of Alan Freed and early rock and roll bands what had been labeled as "black music" by critics was still to controversial drawing protests from some very conservative or racially biased whites. From the beginning the style was attacked as being too overtly sexual which only seemed to fuel the interest in the style.
White performers began to be hired to record and play the songs often doing a poor job. Still the music began to take hold with fans as white owned stations began to play the music. Artist Pat Boone recorded versions of Little Richard songs while Ricky Nelson recorded Fats Domino tunes. As the songs became popular producers would re-release the original recording often without paying the original artist a dime. On March 21, 1952 in Cleveland Ohio Alan Freed orchestrated the first rock and roll concert. The audience and the performers were racially mixed and after one song thousands of fans broke into the sold out venue causing the show to be shut down but the die was cast for rock to become the driving force in music.
In 1954 Elvis Presley would come into Sun Records with a request to record a record for his mother. Stunned by his sheer raw talent owner Sam Phillips asked Elvis to record with professional musicians. Elvis' first record released for Phillips' Sun Records was called That's All Right Mama. It became a huge hit and propelled Elvis into history as the first true rock and roll star. Rock and roll inspired more genres than any other style of music to date

A Musical style that arose in the U.S. in the mid-1950s and became the dominant form of popular music in the world. The roots of which lay principally in Rhythm and Blues (R&B) and Country Music . An Australian Radio Interview in which disc jockey Alan Freed described Diddley as "the man with the original sound that's going to rock and roll you out of your seat." What is Rock And Roll?

It is a form of Popular Music from the late 20th century which typically features a vocal melody (often with vocal harmony) that is supported by accompaniment of Electric Guitars, a Bass Guitar, and Drums, often with a strong back beat. Keyboard instruments such as organ, piano, or Synthesizers are often used in many types of rock music.
The change in terminology from rock and roll to simply rock indicates both continuity with and a break from the earlier period; rock music was no longer just for dancing. After 1964 the music was influenced by British groups such as the Beatles. With the "British Invasion" this reinvigorated musical style spread back to the United States, and became an international cultural phenomenon with considerable social impact. Rock has evolved into a multitude of highly-varying styles with widespread popularity .
